Sharpa raises over RMB 4.5 billion as it puts robots to work at Dairy Queen
Sharpa, a robotics startup founded in 2024, has secured over RMB 4.5 billion (USD 668 million) in a funding round, pushing its post-money valuation to RMB 22 billion (USD 3.3 billion). Key investors include Alibaba Group, Meituan, Tencent, JD.com, and Transsion, alongside several investment firms. The capital will fuel R&D, talent acquisition, and the commercial deployment of its general-purpose robots. Sharpa specializes in dexterous manipulation, aiming to develop embodied intelligence systems for complex physical tasks in environments designed for humans. The company recently launched a fully autonomous robot operation at a Dairy Queen store in Shanghai, marking a significant step towards commercial viability.
Sharpa's substantial RMB 4.5 billion funding round, backed by major Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, underscores a strong belief in the commercialization of general-purpose robotics within Asia. The company's focus on dexterous manipulation and its "zero retrofit" approach, demonstrated at the Dairy Queen in Shanghai, addresses critical barriers to broader adoption. By designing robots to use existing human tools and environments, Sharpa aims to reduce deployment costs and complexity, a key factor for scalability across diverse service industries in China and beyond. The Dairy Queen deployment, handling a 55-step process autonomously, is a crucial test case for long-term reliability and economic value. The ability of Sharpa's system to self-correct, use tactile sensing, and adapt to real-world variability without human intervention points to a significant advance. However, the challenge remains whether these capabilities can transfer efficiently from a controlled workflow to the broader, less predictable demands of other commercial and eventually household settings. The continuous operation in Shanghai will generate valuable data, but proving generalizability across different tasks and environments is the next hurdle for Sharpa and the wider robotics sector in Asia.
