Laopu Gold stresses bright outlook and global plans as growth slows
Chinese jewelry brand Laopu Gold reported a 60.3% increase in first-half revenue to RMB 19.8 billion (USD 2.9 billion), with net income up 88.2% to RMB 4.27 billion (USD 633.9 million). These figures, while strong, fell short of analyst estimates and represented a slowdown from the previous year, attributed to a pullback in gold prices. The company, sometimes called the "Hermes of gold," saw its stock price fall 24% after preliminary weaker-than-expected results in late July. Laopu Gold is now pursuing aggressive international expansion, with discussions underway in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, and plans for stores in the US, Canada, France, and the UK next year.
Laopu Gold's strategy to maintain its premium pricing model, despite gold price fluctuations, faces scrutiny after its first-half 2026 earnings missed estimates. The company's unique approach of not pricing products by weight or adjusting for daily gold changes, instead raising prices two to three times annually, helped improve its gross profit margin to 41.3% due to low-cost inventory. However, this strategy appears to have contributed to a sharp sequential decline in Q2 revenue and profit, with HSBC noting a widening product price premium over spot gold as a factor. Founder Xu Gaoming remains confident, forecasting a gold price recovery from Q3 2026 and asserting strong brand pricing power. The company's aggressive international expansion plans, particularly into Southeast Asia, the US, Canada, France, and the UK, are crucial to diversifying revenue streams and proving the resilience of its brand premium beyond the Chinese market. The success of these overseas ventures will be key to validating Laopu Gold's luxury positioning and its ability to decouple from commodity price volatility.
