AI‑fuelled boom lifts global billionaire count, Hong Kong retains top spot in Asia
Hong Kong maintained its position as the leading Asian city for billionaires last year, despite a slight decrease in its billionaire population to 106. Globally, Hong Kong ranks second behind New York, which saw its billionaire count rise to 164. Mainland Chinese cities, particularly Beijing and Shenzhen, are rapidly closing the gap, driven by wealth accumulation from the artificial intelligence boom. Beijing now hosts 61 billionaires, while Shenzhen ties with Dubai at 43, placing both among the top 15 global cities. This trend reflects a broader global expansion in the billionaire population, the strongest since 2020, with wealth concentrating at the very top.
The Altrata report shows Hong Kong's lead in Asia for billionaires is narrowing, with mainland Chinese cities like Beijing and Shenzhen gaining ground due to the AI boom. While Hong Kong's billionaire headcount slightly dipped to 106, Beijing now has 61 billionaires and Shenzhen 43. This suggests a significant shift in wealth accumulation dynamics within Asia, directly linked to advancements and investments in artificial intelligence. The increasing prominence of mainland Chinese cities in the global billionaire rankings, with both Beijing and Shenzhen in the top 15, points to the substantial economic impact of the AI sector. For Asia's tech landscape, this indicates a growing concentration of capital and influence within China's AI ecosystem, which could further fuel innovation and competition in the region. The key thing to watch is how this AI-driven wealth translates into new startup investments and technological leadership across Asia.
