    What Is AI Actually Doing?

It's not thinking. It's not searching. It's predicting — one word at a time.

    The magic trick

AI seems to think. It doesn't reason. It doesn't understand. It doesn't search the internet or retrieve facts. What it actually does will change how you use it — and explain every time it gets things wrong.

Three things that explain everything AI does

It reads: AI is trained on billions of pages of human writing. This is where all its 'knowledge' comes from.

It learns patterns: From all that reading, AI learns statistical patterns — which words tend to follow which other words. It doesn't understand meaning. It learns associations at massive scale.

It predicts: When you send a message, AI predicts the most likely next word — called a token — then the next, until the response is complete. Every word is a prediction. Nothing more.

Why AI gets things confidently wrong

AI isn't retrieving facts — it's completing patterns. When asked who won an award, it predicts which words sound like a correct answer. If those patterns point toward a plausible-sounding wrong answer, AI produces it confidently — because confidence isn't part of the mechanism. Only probability is. This is called hallucination. It's not lying. It's working exactly as designed.

Which statement about AI is actually true?

AI doesn't search anything in real time. By default it only has what it learned during training, and it generates responses by predicting likely continuations — not by looking things up. Output that sounds authoritative can still be completely fabricated. Now you know when to verify.

You just looked inside the machine.

How AI works. Why it hallucinates. What a token is. Most people use AI for months without understanding this. You understand it after 15 minutes. Next: Prompt Engineering for Non-Techies — now that you know how the machine works, learn how to instruct it.

Nice work — you've finished the reading
