Google to grow office space in Taiwan by 60%
Google is expanding its Taiwan office space by 60 percent, reflecting the growing role of local partners in developing the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Amin Vahdat, Google’s senior vice president and chief technologist for AI and infrastructure, stated that Taiwan is a critical engineering hub for Google’s hardware design and manufacturing. Taiwanese companies are already participating in the codesign of Google’s AI systems, working on future generations of hardware including rack-level architecture and system reliability. This expansion supports Google’s operations, which include a data center in Changhua County and its largest hardware engineering hub outside the US.
Google’s 60 percent expansion of its Taiwan office space underscores the island’s deepening integration into the global AI supply chain, moving beyond manufacturing to codesign. This reflects a significant shift where Taiwan is not just a production base but a core innovation partner for Google’s AI infrastructure. The collaboration extends to advanced packaging, liquid cooling, and high-power systems, with Taiwanese companies directly involved in developing next-generation hardware. This deep codesign partnership is accelerating, with Google anticipating the first chips designed by the company and produced by TSMC to be tested and validated by its Taiwan team. The demand for computing power is growing tenfold year over year, driven by increasingly capable AI models. This creates bottlenecks in power availability, chip supply, memory, and cooling. Taiwan’s ability to maintain its position will depend on greater manufacturing automation, power efficiency, and improved supply chain cooperation. Google’s commitment to carbon-free energy also points to future investments in renewables, batteries, and geothermal power in the region.
