Geely’s core profit rises nearly half as exports cushion China sales decline
Geely Automobile saw its core profit attributable to shareholders jump 46.2% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, driven by robust overseas growth and a strategic shift towards higher-priced vehicles. This strong performance helped offset a significant decline in domestic sales within China. The Chinese automaker reported a core profit of RMB 9.68 billion (USD 1.4 billion) and a revenue increase of 14.7% to RMB 173.6 billion (USD 25.8 billion). Despite a modest 1% rise in overall vehicle sales, Geely’s gross profit climbed 25.7%, with its gross margin expanding by 1.6 percentage points, primarily due to its globalization and premiumization strategies.
Geely’s impressive first-half performance, largely fueled by exports and a focus on premium vehicles, highlights a critical trend in Asia’s automotive sector: Chinese manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond their saturated domestic market for growth. This strategy is particularly vital given the intense competition and declining demand within China. Geely’s ability to significantly outpace the broader Chinese passenger vehicle and NEV export growth demonstrates its strong competitive positioning and effective internationalization efforts. This shift not only diversifies revenue streams but also enhances brand perception and market share in key global regions.
The substantial increase in R&D expenditure and distribution costs underscores Geely’s commitment to innovation and global expansion, essential for long-term sustainability in a rapidly evolving industry. While foreign exchange losses impacted reported profit, the underlying operational strength, particularly in the second quarter, indicates a resilient business model. This success story provides a blueprint for other Asian tech and manufacturing companies seeking to navigate domestic market challenges by leveraging global opportunities and strategic product differentiation.
