Ecosystem Roundup: The AI funding boom has a Southeast Asia-sized blind spot
Global venture funding reached US$510 billion in the first half of 2026, a record half-year total. This figure masks a significant concentration in AI. OpenAI and Anthropic alone secured 43 percent of all venture dollars deployed worldwide during this period. Anthropic's US$65 billion raise accounted for nearly one-third of the total. This leaves Southeast Asia with a notable blind spot in the AI funding boom.
The global venture capital surge to US$510 billion in H1 2026 is not a broad market win. It is an AI funding concentration. Two companies, OpenAI and Anthropic, absorbed 43 percent of all venture capital deployed globally. Anthropic's US$65 billion raise alone equals nearly one-third of that total. This reflects a winner-take-all dynamic in foundational AI model development.
This concentration leaves Southeast Asia at a disadvantage. Local AI startups compete for a much smaller pool of capital. They must differentiate beyond foundational models. Focus on niche applications and regional language models is critical. Singapore and Indonesia will need to foster more specialized AI talent to attract what capital remains.
The test for Southeast Asia is whether local governments and VCs can create a distinct value proposition for regional AI. Without it, the funding gap will widen. Watch for new government initiatives in Q4 2026 that specifically target applied AI or local data sets. This would signal a shift in regional strategy.
