Divergent results for Apple suppliers highlight memory price squeeze ahead of new iPhone
Two major Chinese suppliers to Apple reported divergent first-half results, illustrating the impact of rising memory prices on profits. Lens Technology, a Shenzhen- and Hong Kong-listed smartphone glass screen maker, saw its net income nearly halve to 577 million yuan (US$85.8 million) in the six months through June. This decline occurred as revenue dropped 12.4 percent to 28.9 billion yuan. The company attributed the slump to soaring memory costs in consumer electronics and exchange rate fluctuations, which dampened demand and forced production scale-backs. Lens Technology is now pinning its hopes on high-end components for an upcoming foldable device project with Apple to reverse the downturn in the second half of the year.
The decline in Lens Technology's first-half net income by nearly 50 percent to 577 million yuan highlights the severe profit squeeze faced by Chinese component makers due to soaring memory prices. This directly impacts China's manufacturing sector, which relies heavily on global supply chains for consumer electronics. The company's strategy to pivot towards high-end components like ultra-thin glass (UTG) for Apple's anticipated foldable device is a critical move for its financial recovery. This situation reflects a broader challenge for Asian tech suppliers: balancing cost pressures with the need to innovate for next-generation devices. Lens Technology's focus on complex, high-value components for foldable phones, a segment expected to be a rare bright spot this year, positions it as a key player in Apple's supply chain. The success of this pivot will be a significant indicator for other Chinese suppliers navigating similar market dynamics and looking to capitalize on new product cycles.
