ChatGPT Health adds Epic integration for clinicians to import patient data
OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT Health with Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system, which manages data for over 325 million patients. This integration allows clinicians to import patient data and use AI for querying information. Clinicians can access details such as appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation to summarize information and prepare for future appointments. The company emphasizes that the integration provides read-only access to health records, with AI not writing back to patient charts. OpenAI also introduced a new Healthcare Public Data plug-in to fetch information from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed.
OpenAI’s integration of ChatGPT Health with Epic’s EHR system, which holds data for over 325 million patients, represents a significant step in AI adoption within healthcare. While the immediate impact is on US clinicians, the read-only access model and the ability to synthesize complex patient data could inform similar deployments in Asia. Healthcare systems in markets like India and Singapore, which are increasingly digitizing patient records, could explore comparable AI tools for efficiency gains in pre-visit reviews and clinical timelines. The key watchpoint for Asian markets will be the balance between AI utility and patient data privacy, especially given the strict data localization and consent frameworks in many countries. OpenAI’s finding of 99.1% safety in physician responses is encouraging, but the company’s ongoing legal challenges in the US regarding unsafe advice underscore the need for robust validation and regulatory oversight before such systems see widespread adoption across Asia. The Healthcare Public Data plug-in, drawing from global sources, could also be adapted to include regional medical databases, enhancing its relevance for Asian practitioners.
