BMW iX3 EV sees strong pre-order debut in China while facing delivery and display hurdles, report says
BMW has opened pre-sales for its iX3 EV in China, securing tens of thousands of preliminary orders despite a lack of showroom display cars. The iX3 is priced between 269,900 yuan (39,700 USD) and 339,900 yuan (49,900 USD). Dealers have been selling the vehicle using only brochures and digital images, with physical display cars not expected until late October. The top-trim iX3 features a CLTC range of 919 km and includes end-to-end autonomous driving developed with Momenta, along with an intelligent cockpit integrated with Alibaba’s Qwen and DeepSeek large language models for voice interaction. While initial deliveries are slated for November, large-scale delivery will not materialize until 2027, with some customers facing a wait until January 31, 2027.
BMW's iX3 EV has seen a strong pre-order debut in China, with tens of thousands of preliminary orders despite the unusual circumstance of selling without physical showroom cars. This suggests significant brand equity for BMW and that the iX3's specifications, including a 919 km CLTC range and standard autonomous driving developed with Momenta, are competitive. The integration of Alibaba's Qwen and DeepSeek LLMs for the intelligent cockpit is also a notable feature for the Chinese market. The primary risk for BMW is the extended delivery timeline, with large-scale deliveries not expected until 2027. In a market where competitors like Xiaomi and Nio often offer immediate delivery, a five-month window for initial deliveries and a multi-year wait for large-scale fulfillment could lead to order attrition. BMW is attempting to mitigate this with a "waiting points" mechanism, but the delay could still impact customer retention in China's highly competitive EV landscape. This situation highlights the challenge for traditional automakers in matching the rapid launch-to-delivery cycles of local Chinese EV players. While the initial pre-orders are strong, the long wait times present a critical test for BMW's ability to maintain customer interest and trust in a fast-moving market.
