Unbreakable Shield: Why Taiwan’s Chip Expertise Cannot Be Cloned
Taiwan's semiconductor industry is proving difficult to replicate, despite Western efforts to de-risk supply chains from the island. Leading manufacturer TSMC has established multi-billion dollar foundries in Arizona, Kyushu, and Dresden. However, the broader ecosystem of advanced packaging, materials, substrates, and a dense network of suppliers remains anchored in Taiwan. This means that even American-made wafers will continue to rely on Taiwan-based processes and expertise. The island's "silicon shield" now encompasses a comprehensive cluster of design, wafer fabrication, advanced packaging, materials, and engineering talent, making it a multi-layer platform that is almost impossible to clone.
The push by Western governments to diversify semiconductor manufacturing away from Taiwan faces a significant hurdle: the island's comprehensive chip ecosystem extends far beyond just wafer foundries. While TSMC is building new fabs in the US, Japan, and Europe, critical components like advanced packaging, materials, and the intricate network of suppliers remain predominantly in Taiwan. For Asia, this means that despite new investments, the region's central role in the global chip supply chain, particularly Taiwan's, is unlikely to diminish significantly in the near term. The IC Taiwan Grand Challenge, attracting 209 teams from 38 countries, further solidifies Taiwan's position as an open innovation hub, not merely a foundry island. Our view is that any major disruption to Taiwan, whether military or natural, would still send severe shockwaves through the global chip supply chain. The efforts in the US and Europe are more about risk mitigation and political leverage than achieving true independence from Taiwan's expertise. The depth of specialized suppliers and process know-how on the island is a competitive advantage that cannot be easily transplanted, even with substantial subsidies for new facilities.
