Taipower planning for AI power demand
Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) is planning to establish direct power lines to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This initiative addresses the increasing strain on the national grid due to rising AI power demands. Taipower chairman Tseng Wen-sheng stated that AI data center operators will manage these dedicated lines, with their length, costs, and timing determined by market mechanisms. The utility is also discussing future power needs with the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association to ensure sufficient supply. This strategy aims to enhance grid resilience and diversify risks, moving away from relying solely on the main north-south transmission grid.
Taipower's plan to supply AI data centers via direct power lines reflects a critical shift in Taiwan's energy strategy. By allowing operators to manage these dedicated lines, the utility is decentralizing power distribution for high-demand users. The focus on direct lines from power plants to science parks, such as Datan Power Plant to Taoyuan Aerotropolis, aims to ease congestion and improve grid resilience following past outages, like the one on March 3, 2022.
