Reinvest AI dividends in Taiwan
Taiwanese President William Lai has proposed a NT$10,000 cash handout to every citizen, citing economic benefits from the artificial intelligence boom. This initiative follows a precedent of similar cash distributions from budget surpluses, a practice that has gained bipartisan support. However, critics argue these funds should instead be directed towards environmental conservation and renewable energy projects. They point to the significant water and electricity demands of the AI industry, which are impacting Taiwan’s marine ecosystems and endangered species like the Taiwanese humpback dolphin. The debate centers on whether to distribute immediate cash or invest in long-term ecological and energy sustainability.
Taiwan’s proposed NT$10,000 cash handout, while popular, masks a deeper debate about the environmental cost of the AI boom. The real story for Asia’s tech sector is the growing pressure on energy infrastructure and biodiversity, particularly along Taiwan’s west coast. AI’s immense power consumption, often from facilities near marine habitats, directly impacts endangered species such as the Taiwanese humpback dolphin, whose population has fallen to an estimated 48. This situation points to a critical need for ecological compensation policies that currently lag behind development. Taiwan’s government faces a choice: a one-off payment or a strategic investment in green energy and conservation, which could also help meet international supply chain standards like RE100. Our view is that the cash handout, while politically expedient, misses an opportunity to address the long-term sustainability challenges posed by AI development. Investing AI dividends into decentralized renewable energy and ecological restoration, as suggested by the Taiwanese White Dolphin Advisory Panel’s target of 100 dolphins by 2030, would create more enduring benefits. This approach could also strengthen Taiwan’s position in global supply chains that increasingly demand green energy, a crucial consideration for chip manufacturers and other tech companies in the region.
