China’s Zhurong rover has provided new evidence for a vanished northern ocean on Mars. Its Rover Penetrating Radar detected buried, sloping sand-and-gravel deposits at depths of 10 to 35 meters, resembling an ancient beach. These findings, published in a February 2025 study, show consistent inclinations ranging from 6 to 20 degrees across a 1.3-kilometer traverse in Utopia Planitia. Separately, University of Arkansas researchers identified nine river deltas with backwater geometry, suggesting rivers once entered a vast standing body of water. These independent observations support the hypothesis of a large ancient body of water in Mars’s northern lowlands, making it harder to dismiss.
The Zhurong rover’s radar data from Utopia Planitia offers compelling physical evidence for a Martian ocean, a long-debated topic. The detection of buried, sloping layers consistent with beach deposits at depths up to 35 meters, with average inclinations of 14.5 degrees, provides a concrete geological fingerprint. This complements separate research on river deltas, strengthening the case for a significant body of water in Mars's northern lowlands. For Asia's space sector, particularly China's, this reinforces the scientific impact of its deep-space missions. The Tianwen-1 mission, through Zhurong's RoPeR instrument, is delivering high-value planetary science. This success positions China as a key contributor to Mars exploration, moving beyond just mission execution to fundamental scientific discovery, which could influence future international collaborations and mission planning in the region.
