Is China’s fairytale cosmetics brand Flower Knows a K-beauty rival?
Chinese cosmetics brand Flower Knows, known for its whimsical designs, has attracted significant investment from Proya Cosmetics, China's largest listed beauty company. Proya increased its stake in Flower Knows' parent company to 51% in May, valuing the brand at RMB 2.8 billion (USD 415.7 million). Flower Knows generated RMB 1.7 billion (USD 252.4 million) in revenue last year and RMB 675 million (USD 100.2 million) in the first quarter of this year. The brand, founded in 2016, is expanding internationally with sales in Japan and South Korea, and pop-up stores in the US and UK.
The investment by Proya Cosmetics into Flower Knows reflects a strategic push by Chinese beauty brands to gain international market share, directly challenging K-beauty's dominance. Flower Knows' rapid revenue growth, reaching RMB 1.7 billion last year and RMB 675 million in Q1 2024, demonstrates its domestic appeal and potential for overseas expansion. Proya's increased stake to 51% values Flower Knows at USD 415.7 million, indicating confidence in its global prospects, particularly in markets like Japan and South Korea where it already sells products. The thing to watch is whether Flower Knows can sustain its international momentum against established K-beauty giants and other C-beauty competitors. While its global Instagram following of over two million is notable, the domestic C-beauty market faces fierce competition, which led to Proya's net profit shrinking last year for the first time in a decade. Proya views Flower Knows as a pioneer for overseas expansion, but its ability to translate social media presence into consistent international sales will be key to its long-term success and impact on the broader Asian beauty market.
