Huawei, HP settle disputes with multi-year Wi-fi patent cross-licensing deal
Huawei Technologies and HP have settled their Wi-fi patent disputes through a multi-year global cross-licensing agreement. This deal grants HP the right to use specific Huawei Wi-fi patents in its personal computers for a fee. The agreement resolves a lawsuit Huawei filed against HP in 2025 concerning Wi-fi 6 patents. HP gained access to some contested patents last November by becoming a licensee of Sisvel, an Italian intellectual property management firm. This new agreement formalizes the broader patent usage between the two technology giants.
Huawei's push to monetize its patent portfolio is a key development for Asian tech firms. This cross-licensing deal with HP, following a 2025 lawsuit over Wi-fi 6 patents, shows Huawei's strategy to generate returns on its substantial R&D investments. Alan Fan, Huawei's chief IP officer, emphasized sharing innovation through licensing, particularly for standardized technologies like Wi-fi. For Asian companies, this reflects a growing trend where intellectual property becomes a more active revenue stream. While HP stated the agreement does not indicate a deeper strategic partnership, the resolution of a patent dispute with a major US PC maker points to the increasing importance of IP management and cross-licensing in global tech markets. Companies in China and across Asia with strong patent portfolios will likely follow Huawei's lead in seeking to commercialize their innovations.
