Former OpenAI researcher Yonglong Tian named Tencent Hunyuan multimodal head
Yonglong Tian, a former OpenAI researcher, has been appointed head of multimodal models for Tencent’s Hunyuan team. He joined Tencent in July and now reports directly to Shunyu Yao, who oversees the company’s foundation-model development. Tian’s background includes work on computer vision, representation learning, and generative models at Google Research, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI. This appointment follows Tencent’s decision in July to consolidate its large-language-model and multimodal-model teams into a single foundation-model department under Shunyu Yao.
Tencent’s appointment of Yonglong Tian to lead multimodal models for its Hunyuan team reflects a clear push to integrate advanced AI capabilities. Tian’s experience from OpenAI and Google DeepMind brings significant expertise in computer vision and generative models to Tencent’s unified foundation-model department. This move suggests Tencent is prioritizing a cohesive strategy for AI development, aiming to strengthen its competitive position against other major tech players in China and across Asia. The consolidation of AI teams under Shunyu Yao in July, followed by Tian’s hire, indicates Tencent is streamlining its AI research and development. The focus on multimodal models is critical for applications requiring the processing of various data types, such as images, text, and video. The challenge for Tencent will be to translate this high-level talent and organizational restructuring into tangible product advancements and market share gains in a rapidly evolving AI landscape.
