Call for Trump-Xi AI safety talks comes as state media slams US AI governance
An OpenAI executive and former White House adviser, Dean Ball, is advocating for AI safety collaboration between the United States and China. Ball believes a window of opportunity for cooperation will "widen over at least the next few months" due to escalating AI risks and an upcoming bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that officials will discuss AI guardrails ahead of Xi's planned state visit to the US on September 24. However, Chinese state media, through the CCTV-affiliated account Yuyuan Tantian, has criticized US AI governance, specifically accusing Anthropic of aggressive lobbying and attempting to dictate industry rules.
The call for US-China AI safety talks, coming from OpenAI's Dean Ball, reflects a pragmatic shift in thinking about global AI governance. While the US and China have a complex relationship, the shared risks of advanced AI models are creating a new imperative for dialogue. The upcoming September 24 meeting between President Trump and President Xi presents a concrete opportunity to establish initial guardrails, a development that could influence how Asian nations approach their own AI regulatory frameworks. However, the simultaneous critique from Chinese state media, targeting US firms like Anthropic for perceived attempts to dictate industry rules, points to a significant hurdle. This suggests that any cooperation will be fraught with geopolitical tension and a battle for normative influence. For Asian tech companies and policymakers, the key will be to observe whether these high-level discussions translate into tangible, multi-party agreements or remain largely symbolic, given the underlying mistrust and competing visions for AI's future.
