AI boom, profit surge fuel China’s ambitious chip assembly buildout
China's leading semiconductor packaging and testing companies are undertaking a multibillion-dollar capacity expansion. This initiative is driven by a surge in artificial intelligence demand, strong first-half profit growth, and Beijing's push for tech self-sufficiency. Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology (JCET), Tongfu Microelectronics, and Huatian Technology have announced combined investments exceeding 15 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion) for advanced packaging facilities. These investments aim to scale high-end advanced packaging for AI accelerators, following robust earnings growth in the first six months of 2026.
Chinese chip packaging firms are investing heavily in new capacity, with JCET, Tongfu Microelectronics, and Huatian Technology committing over 15 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion) to expansion. This reflects a significant push into advanced packaging for AI accelerators, driven by strong demand and Beijing's self-sufficiency goals. JCET, for example, saw its net profit jump 79.4 percent to 845 million yuan in the first half of 2026, with revenue hitting a record 19.5 billion yuan. The thing to watch is how quickly these new facilities, such as JCET's 7.8 billion yuan Shanghai plant, can come online and meet the escalating demand for high-end AI chips. While the profit growth is substantial, the long-term success hinges on execution and the ability to integrate advanced packaging technologies at scale. Tongfu Microelectronics' forecast of up to 337 percent profit surge, partly from its AMD partnership, suggests a strong market, but actual delivery on these ambitious expansion plans will be critical for China's semiconductor independence.
