Realizing Taiwan’s AI ambitions
Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) vice president Tsai Chih-meng recently met with French counterparts to discuss energy infrastructure for AI. The focus was on power grids, transformers, and fuel supplies, not new AI investments. Taipower has received 75 transmission-level connection requests from data centers, totaling 4,523 megawatts of requested capacity. However, 40 percent of these requests expired without formal applications. This shows the need for better project maturity assessment in grid planning.

The real test for Taiwan is energy security. The country remains highly dependent on imported fuels. Diversifying liquefied natural gas suppliers helps but does not eliminate shipping risks. Geopolitical uncertainty makes this a critical vulnerability for Taiwan's industrial future.
