Three junior high students from the Philippine Science High School-Caraga have developed Ligtas Skwela, an online platform for managing school emergencies. The system allows teachers and administrators to track students during crises like fires or earthquakes. Ligtas Skwela won first place in the student category of the Startup Technology Pitching Competition during the Department of Science and Technology’s Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week in Caraga. The team, mentored by engineer Lyndon Bermoy, plans to develop an offline version and incorporate physical hardware, envisioning a subscription model costing P30,000 annually for a school with 1,000 students.

    Nexa 摘要

The Ligtas Skwela platform, developed by Philippine students, addresses a critical gap in emergency response within schools: real-time student tracking. Its dual Teacher Mode and Commander Mode interfaces provide a structured approach to accountability during crises, moving beyond simple headcounts to individual student status. This reflects a growing focus on practical, localized tech solutions for public safety in the Philippines, driven by recent events such as the Ateneo de Zamboanga University shooting mentioned by developer Lorenzo Pariñas. The project's win at a Department of Science and Technology competition highlights government support for student-led innovation. However, the current reliance on an internet connection presents a challenge in areas with unreliable infrastructure, a common issue across parts of Southeast Asia. The team's plan for an offline version and integration with physical hardware will be crucial for broader adoption and effectiveness in diverse school environments.
