Google Blocks Gemini by Default for U.S. School Accounts

Google will disable generative AI chatbots, including Gemini, by default for U.S. elementary, middle, and high school student accounts, reversing an August policy. The change, which requires administrators to manually activate these services, responds to concerns from educators and parents about student over-reliance on artificial intelligence.

Google's updated policy means that K-12 schools in the United States must now opt-in to use generative AI services, rather than having them automatically enabled. This shift, applying to schools utilizing Google's education software, aims to give administrators greater control over AI tool access amid reports of students relying too heavily on the technology for academic and emotional support.

However, the practical effectiveness of this default disablement is reportedly limited by Google Search, a foundational service for many schools. Google Search integrates AI features such as AI Overviews, which summarize search results, and AI Mode, a conversational search function. Schools are presented with a binary choice: either permit Google Search with its embedded AI capabilities or block the entire search service, as there is no setting to allow search while excluding its AI components.

This creates a tension between granting schools control over direct AI chatbot access and Google's assertion that AI is a core element of its search service. Critics, including the president of the American Federation of Teachers, allege Google prioritizes business interests, while a former FTC chair suggests Google is leveraging its search market dominance to push AI adoption in schools.

Google is also expanding a "guided learning" feature within Google Classroom, and piloting it in the search service at some U.S. schools, designed to walk students through concepts rather than providing direct answers. This initiative aims to improve AI for learning, though Stanford University's Graduate School of Education notes a lack of high-quality research on AI's impact on student outcomes.
