China’s chip supply chain ‘safer’ as self-sufficiency push gains traction, says top planner
China's top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), stated on Friday that the country's semiconductor supply chain is now "much safer." NDRC spokeswoman Li Chao reported significant improvements in supply chain security this year, citing steady growth in home-grown chipmaking equipment and materials. This development reflects China's accelerated push for chip self-sufficiency, driven by increasing pressure from US export controls. Chinese integrated circuit exports nearly doubled to US$216 billion in the first seven months of the year, fueled by demand for AI hardware.
China's claim of a "much safer" semiconductor supply chain, as stated by the NDRC, points to Beijing's determined effort to counter US export controls. The focus on "full-chain industrial synergy" rather than isolated breakthroughs suggests a maturing strategy to build out domestic capabilities across the entire chip production process.
