China’s AI Models Lead Global Usage for 18 Straight Weeks as Ox Alpha Takes No. 1 Spot
Chinese AI models have maintained their dominance in global usage for 18 consecutive weeks, with global AI model usage reaching 113 trillion tokens from August 24 to August 30. Chinese models accounted for 55.16 trillion tokens during this period, a 36.26% week-over-week increase. U.S. models recorded 17.07 trillion tokens, despite a faster 76.71% weekly growth rate. The top three models by weekly usage are all from China, with Ox Alpha, later confirmed as Zhipu's GLM-5.3-Flash, taking the number one spot with 15.7 trillion tokens.
Zhipu's GLM-5.3-Flash, initially known as Ox Alpha, quickly ascended to become the top-used AI model globally, driving China's continued lead in AI usage. This reflects a significant shift in the AI model market, where factors beyond raw benchmark performance are increasingly critical. GLM-5.3-Flash's success is attributed to its native multimodal capabilities, a large context window, and aggressive pricing, offered at approximately one-tenth the regular price of GLM-5.3, with promotional discounts further reducing costs. This rapid adoption by an anonymous model, later revealed by Zhipu, underscores the importance of inference cost and accessibility for market penetration in Asia. The model's ability to handle text, image, and video inputs within a single architecture, combined with its cost-effectiveness, allowed it to quickly gain traction despite being a newer entrant. This suggests that Chinese developers are prioritizing practical deployment and affordability, which is a key differentiator in the competitive Asian AI landscape. The sustained high usage of Chinese models, generating more than three times the volume of U.S. models, indicates a robust domestic ecosystem focused on practical, cost-efficient AI solutions. While U.S. models show faster weekly growth, the sheer volume and consistent lead of Chinese models like GLM-5.3-Flash point to a strategic advantage in scaling AI applications across the region.
