Asia's grid constraints tighten as AI and data centres drive power demand, says Fitch report

The surge in AI and data center investment is forcing a return to thermal power in emerging Asian markets. This is a direct response to deteriorating grid conditions. Forecasts for electricity consumption growth have increased significantly: Vietnam expects 5.6 percent annual growth, Malaysia 3.3 percent, and Thailand 2.9 percent over the next decade. Regulatory tightening in Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia aims to limit new grid connections. This protects grid stability, but it also slows data center expansion. Policymakers are prioritizing dispatchable capacity, which means more coal and gas. This trade-off between grid stability and carbon targets will define energy policy in Southeast Asia for the next five years. The test for Indonesia is whether it can balance its own data center ambitions with its renewable energy goals.
