XPENG Expands Collaboration with Google to Bring Google Play into Its AI-Powered Cockpits
XPENG announced it will integrate Google Play directly into its AI-powered cockpits, expanding its collaboration with Google. This integration, scheduled for early 2027, aims to provide phone-optional access to automotive-optimized apps from over 100 countries, building on XPENG's prior integration of Google Maps.
XPENG's decision to embed Google Play, built on Android Automotive OS, into its vehicles represents a strategic choice to enhance its in-car digital experience. By leveraging an established global app ecosystem, XPENG aims to provide a localized and continuously updated service for drivers and passengers. This approach means new app content can evolve without requiring major full-vehicle over-the-air updates, as developers manage app updates through Google Play.
The direct integration is intended to offer a "phone-optional" experience, suggesting a focus on convenience and reducing the need for drivers to use personal mobile devices for in-car functions. Users will be able to interact with these apps using XPENG's multilingual AI-powered voice assistant, indicating a push towards a more integrated and hands-free user interface for services like navigation, entertainment, charging, and parking.
This initiative is an expansion of XPENG's collaboration with Google, following the successful integration of Google Maps' Auto SDK in July 2026. For XPENG, adopting a widely recognized platform like Google Play could enhance its appeal in overseas markets by offering familiar digital services, potentially simplifying the user experience for a broader customer base by providing access to hundreds of apps tailored for car screens.
