WeChat opens the door to phone-based AI agents, on its own terms
WeChat is collaborating with major Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Huawei, Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Vivo to integrate phone-based AI agents directly into its platform. This new agent-to-agent (A2A) capability will allow users to initiate WeChat calls and messages through their phone’s AI assistant, such as Huawei’s Xiaoyi or Xiaomi’s Xiao Ai. Unlike previous attempts by phone makers to use graphical user interface (GUI) agents that simulated user taps, this A2A approach involves a controlled, encrypted protocol requiring dual authorization from both the user and the WeChat app. This move ensures data security and privacy while giving Tencent greater control over how external AI interacts with its superapp, preventing the kind of unauthorized access that led to WeChat blocking earlier GUI automation efforts.
This development signifies a crucial shift in the power dynamics between China’s dominant superapp, WeChat, and smartphone manufacturers vying for deeper AI integration. Tencent’s decision to open a controlled A2A channel, rather than allowing GUI-based automation, clearly asserts its authority over its platform.
