TSMC eyes adding facilities in Texas
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is exploring an expansion of its US manufacturing footprint to Texas, potentially adding facilities beyond its Arizona projects. The company is in discussions with a customer to secure wafer capacity in Texas to address surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
TSMC's consideration of a Texas facility directly responds to the robust demand for AI chips, which the company states is currently outstripping its supply. CEO C.C. Wei indicated that exploring new US sites, including Texas, is part of efforts to maximize capacity support. This move prioritizes meeting immediate customer needs for AI chip production rather than signaling a broader, long-term shift in the company's global manufacturing strategy.
The insistence that any new fab must be run by TSMC, regardless of the investment framework, whether a joint venture like in Japan or the European model, underscores the company's commitment to maintaining operational control. This approach is crucial for ensuring that advanced manufacturing processes and quality standards are consistently applied, which is a primary concern for customers dependent on TSMC's leading-edge silicon.
TSMC's confidence in the sustained growth of AI demand is a core driver for these capacity expansions. The company observes increased adoption of agentic AI and open-source AI models, anticipating that these trends will continue to fuel demand for advanced semiconductors. This outlook informs TSMC's significant investments in expanding its 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer process capacities, projecting a doubling of 2-nanometer capacity next year.
