Swift Pushes Back ISO 20022 Deadline as Industry Readiness Lags
Swift has postponed the November deadline for structured postal addresses in ISO 20022 payment messages. This decision follows requests from several industry groups, citing uneven readiness across regions. The original agreement for this requirement was made in 2023, as part of Standards Release 2026. Swift will now consult with various stakeholders, including banks, central banks, and corporate clients, before providing an updated timeline and approach by December. All payment changes under the release have been deferred, though other updates for securities and trade are still set for the first quarter of 2027.
The delay in Swift's ISO 20022 structured address mandate points to ongoing challenges in global financial infrastructure upgrades, even as over 98% of payment instructions now use the new standard. For Asian markets, this means a continued grace period for financial institutions that have lagged in their system overhauls. While some institutions have already implemented the necessary changes, the uneven adoption across regions suggests that many in Asia may still be catching up, particularly smaller banks and domestic payment market infrastructures. Swift's encouragement for continued preparation underscores the importance of domestic adoption for successful cross-border migration. The deferral of all payment changes under the Standards Release 2026, while other transaction areas like securities move forward in Q1 2027, creates a bifurcated timeline for compliance. This could lead to a staggered investment cycle for Asian financial firms, prioritizing securities and trade system updates over the delayed payment message requirements.
