Singapore Management University (SMU) has launched the Singapore Capital Markets Initiative (SCMI) to expand its research into capital markets, with a specific focus on Asia. Housed within the Centre for Commercial Law in Asia at the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law, the initiative will concentrate on interdisciplinary research, policy dialogue, and talent development at the intersection of law and finance. Its research scope will encompass various areas including equity and debt capital markets, venture capital, private equity, corporate governance, and emerging technologies. This move comes as Asia increasingly dominates global capital markets, now hosting over 55 percent of listed companies and more than half of global venture capital activity.

    Nexa 摘要

The establishment of the Singapore Capital Markets Initiative (SCMI) by SMU is a significant development for Asia's tech ecosystem, signaling a growing recognition of the region's pivotal role in global corporate financing. As traditional IPO markets slow, private capital — including venture capital and private equity — has become increasingly crucial for funding innovation and growth, particularly for startups and emerging tech companies. SMU's focus on these areas, alongside financial regulation and emerging technologies, positions Singapore as a key intellectual hub for understanding and shaping the future of finance in Asia.

This initiative will not only foster deeper academic understanding of complex market dynamics but also facilitate policy dialogue, which is essential for creating robust and supportive regulatory environments for tech innovation. By developing talent at the intersection of law and finance, SCMI can help address the critical need for skilled professionals who can navigate the evolving landscape of capital formation and investment in Asia's rapidly expanding digital economy. This move reinforces Singapore's ambition to be a leader in financial thought leadership, directly benefiting the regional tech and startup scene.
