HKIA to prioritize cost-effectiveness and practical needs in introducing AI, says Vivian Cheung
The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is prioritizing cost-effectiveness, practical needs, and tangible impact in its introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to chief executive officer Vivian Cheung Kar-fay. The strategy includes assessing financial feasibility and strengthening existing systems, alongside comprehensive training programs for employees.
AAHK's approach to AI integration emphasizes a pragmatic assessment of financial viability, focusing on whether new tools can strengthen current operations, optimize resource allocation, or address manpower shortages. This reflects a clear return-on-investment mindset, recognizing that initial AI expenditures are often substantial and require critical budget management.
A crucial element of Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) strategy is ensuring employees can effectively utilize AI tools. The authority has therefore initiated comprehensive training programs to build an AI-literate internal team through hands-on, in-house training. This internal capability development, alongside piloting smaller-scale projects, indicates a controlled, iterative integration.
This focus on end-user proficiency aligns with observations from Chris McLaughlin, chief operating officer of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). McLaughlin noted that DFW involved frontline workers, managers, and consultants in workshops during a recent AI project, which empowered users to define required functionalities and led to higher adoption rates and improved productivity.
