Growatt’s energy storage shift drives third bid for Hong Kong IPO
Growatt, a leading provider of PV inverters and energy storage systems, has submitted its prospectus to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange for the third time, marking a prolonged IPO process that began in June 2022. The company has shifted its focus to Hong Kong after terminating a previous attempt to list on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2021. Growatt’s latest filing reveals a strategic pivot from PV inverters to energy storage, which now accounts for a majority of its revenue and drives its growth. This shift, coupled with a significant surge in its US market presence, reflects broader industry trends towards integrated solar-plus-storage solutions and positions Growatt for a critical public market debut.
Growatt’s repeated attempts to list in Hong Kong, coupled with its strategic pivot to energy storage, highlight the evolving landscape of Asia’s renewable energy sector. The company's move away from PV inverters to higher-margin energy storage systems reflects a broader industry trend towards integrated solar-plus-storage solutions, particularly in mature markets. This transition is crucial for Asian tech companies seeking sustainable growth and improved profitability in a competitive global market. The increasing revenue share from energy storage, now 63.4% of Growatt’s total, demonstrates a successful adaptation to changing market demands and a focus on more lucrative segments.
The significant growth in Growatt’s US market revenue, which surged tenfold in two years to 15.8% of total revenue, underscores the global reach and ambition of Asian energy tech firms. However, this expansion also exposes the company to geopolitical risks and trade restrictions, prompting Growatt to diversify its production base with a new factory in Vietnam. This strategy of de-risking supply chains and leveraging regional manufacturing capabilities is a common theme among Asian tech companies navigating complex international trade environments, signaling a proactive approach to mitigating external challenges and ensuring operational resilience.
