China's main intelligence agency reportedly recruited the spy who targeted NVIDIA's CEO
China's Ministry of State Security reportedly recruited Alice Huang, an executive at Singapore data center firm Megaspeed, to spy on NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. US officials believe Jensen Huang was romantically involved with her, according to reports from The New York Times and The Financial Times, with the alleged aim of influencing US AI chip export policy.
The alleged intelligence operation, as reported by The New York Times, focused on gaining insights into US artificial intelligence plans and potentially influencing NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. The reported objective was to secure US government permission for shipping more advanced chips to China, leveraging Huang's perceived ability to sway presidential decisions on chip sales.
Alice Huang's reported role as an executive at Megaspeed, a significant NVIDIA customer, adds a layer of complexity. Megaspeed reportedly purchased billions' worth of AI chips and built data centers in Southeast Asia. These centers then rented computing power to Alibaba, allegedly providing the Chinese company with access to advanced NVIDIA chips banned in its native country.
While Megaspeed's business activities reportedly facilitated access to restricted technology for a Chinese firm, NVIDIA's internal investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing concerning allegations of Megaspeed's involvement in a smuggling scheme. This distinction highlights the challenge in discerning legitimate commercial operations from reported intelligence gathering efforts and the complexities of enforcing export controls.
