    Your words are the software

Prompt engineering isn't coding. It's learning how to ask — really well. The professionals who master this skill get dramatically better output from the same AI tools everyone else is using.

The 3 parts of a great prompt

Role: Tell AI who it is. 'You are a senior marketing strategist' sets tone, vocabulary, and depth of answer.

Task: Be specific. Not 'write a report' — 'write a 3-bullet summary of Q2 sales with one recommendation at the end.'

Audience: Who is this for? A board presentation needs different language than a Slack message to your team.

    Pick the stronger prompt

The difference between a vague and specific prompt is the difference between useful and useless AI output. Compare these two: 'Write a sales report for last month' versus 'You are a business analyst. Summarise last month's sales for the leadership team. 3 bullets: top product, biggest drop, one recommendation. Under 80 words.'

The second leaves nothing to chance.

    Build a prompt

Now it's your turn. A great prompt for a marketing email subject line would include: your role, the specific task, the target audience, and format constraints. Distractor phrases like 'make it interesting' or 'do your best' add nothing — AI can't act on them.

    You've got the framework

Role. Task. Audience. Three parts. Use them every time you open an AI tool. The professionals who use this consistently get dramatically better output — and get there faster. Now try it in your next real task.
